Surat Aims for 50% EV Sales by 2030

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) recently launched the Green Vehicle Policy (GVP) 2025, setting an ambitious goal: at least half of all new vehicle sales in Surat to be electric by 2030

🚗 What’s New in GVP 2025?

  • Covers EVs, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and biofuel vehicles

  • Runs for five years with a comprehensive city-wide rollout plan

  • Targets the creation of green zones and mobility corridors, plus in-city vehicle production and battery recycling programs
  •

⚡ Infrastructure & Governance

  • 460+ public charging stations to be installed across the city—ensuring at least one station per square kilometre

  • Implementation led by a dedicated Green Vehicle Cell including city officials, power companies, RTOs, traffic police, and industry partners

  • A Green Vehicle Fund will pool resources through municipal budgets, green bonds, CSR contributions, and government grants

🎁 Incentives & Benefits

  • Vehicle tax rebates up to 100% in the first year, tapering to 25% over four years

  • Subsidies: ₹3,000 for early e‑3W goods vehicles, ₹5,000 for e‑rickshaws and pink autos, and loan interest rebates for early adopters of EV LCVs

  • Perks like free parking, reserved parking slots, “Surat Money Card” discounts for Sitilink bus users, and green certification for corporates adopting ≥30% EV fleet

📅 What’s Next

Surat plans a Green Vehicle Expo on September 8, showcasing pilot projects, training sessions on safety protocols, and innovation-focused exhibits to ramp up public engagement and investment

🔍 Why It Matters for EV Buyers & Stakeholders

For those exploring EV options on MeriEV, Surat’s forward-thinking policy is a clear sign of growing support beyond subsidies.

  • Improved charging access and expected lower total cost of ownership makes EV choice easier

  • A more robust ecosystem with after-sales support, infrastructure, and regulatory alignment

  • Confidence that the city is building long-term EV readiness, not just short-term incentives
